Charles Milles Manson (November 12, 1934 – November 19, 2017) led the California-based Manson Family cult based in the late 1960s. Some cult members committed a series of nine murders at four locations in July and August 1969. In 1971, Manson was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the deaths of seven people, including film actress Sharon Tate. The prosecution contended that while Manson never directly ordered the murders, his ideology constituted an overt act of conspiracy. Before the murders, Manson had spent more than half of his life in correctional institutions. While gathering his cult following, Manson was a singer-songwriter on the fringe of the Los Angeles music industry, chiefly through a chance association with Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys, who introduced Manson to record producer Terry Melcher. In 1968, the Beach Boys recorded Manson's song "Cease to Exist", renamed "Never Learn Not to Love" as a single B-side, but without a credit to Manson. Afterward, Manson attempted to secure a record contract through Melcher, but was unsuccessful. Manson would often talk about the Beatles, including their 1968 self-titled album. According to Los Angeles County District Attorney, Vincent Bugliosi, Manson felt guided by his interpretation of the Beatles' lyrics and adopted the term "Helter Skelter" to describe an impending apocalyptic race war. During his trial, Bugliosi argued that Manson had intended to start a race war, although Manson and others disputed this. Contemporary interviews and trial witness testimony insisted that the Tate–LaBianca murders were copycat crimes intended to exonerate Manson's friend Bobby Beausoleil. Manson himself denied having instructed anyone to murder anyone. Manson's notoriety as an emblem of insanity, violence, and the macabre influenced pop culture. Recordings of songs written and performed by Manson were released commercially, starting with Lie: The Love and Terror Cult (1970). Since his incarceration, various musicians have covered some of his songs. Although originally sentenced to death in 1971, his sentence was commuted to life with the possibility of parole after the California Supreme Court invalidated the state's death penalty statute in 1972. He served his life sentence at the California State Prison, Corcoran and died at age 83 in late 2017. Tina Romero Alcázar (born August 14, 1949) is a Mexican actress. A native of New York City, Romero moved to Mexico in her youth, and later established a career there as an actress. Her early film roles included The Divine Caste (1973) and the title character in the horror film Alucarda (1977). She has also appeared in American films, including Missing (1982), opposite Sissy Spacek and Jack Lemmon. Romero has also appeared in numerous Mexican television series, including numerous telenovelas, such as Rosalinda (1999), Mi pecado (2009), Quiero amarte (2014),
Shaun Costello began directing for "loops" (10-minute scenes shown in coin-operated viewers in adult theaters) in NYC in the early 1970s, and soon was directing (and acting in) full porn movies and other grindhouse "roughies" shown in Times Square's 42nd Street adult theaters. Costello took work where he could get it, often working for the Mob, who owned many adult theaters and distribution, and working under different aliases for different theaters so that no one (at the time) knew that he was his own competition. Eventually moving on to a mainstream documentary career, Costello written and directed grindhouse movies - rough and violent and reflecting of their times - have seen a resurgence as the 2010's have seen these movies be remastered and re-released and often seen for the first time in decades. Anyone interested in the history of American porn or grindhouse/exploitation theater of the late 1960s and 1970s will likely have encountered Shaun Costello's work, often unknowingly due to his prolific use of aliases.
Britt Christina Marinette Lindberg (born 6 December 1950, in Gothenburg, Sweden) is a Swedish journalist known internationally for her work as an actress and glamour model in the late 1960s and early 1970s. During her high school years (she was around 18 years old) she started posing nude for men's magazines, such as FIB aktuellt and Lektyr, after having garnered some attention posing in bathing suits for newspapers. She later appeared in men's magazines such as Penthouse (UK), Playboy (U.S.), Lui (France) and Mayfair (UK). She was a Penthouse Pet in the June 1970 issue of Penthouse. Lindberg has appeared or starred in 23 feature films, most of which are erotica, exploitation or softcore pictures. Her first movie was an American production (Maid in Sweden), filmed in Sweden with a Swedish cast. She got her second role in Jan Halldoff's comedy Rötmånad which was released in 1970. The film was seen by over 250,000 Swedes and went on to become a commercial success. Her third film, Exponerad, was released with a lot of hype at the Cannes festival in 1971 and turned her into an international celebrity. A long string of exploitation films followed, many of which were filmed in Germany and Japan. As part of the marketing campaign for Exponerad she also went on a publicity trip to Japan, which later resulted in an invitation to appear in Japanese exploitation films. In Japan she played a major supporting role in Norifumi Suzuki's Pink film classic Sex & Fury. In 1972 she starred as Madeleine in Bo A. Vibenius's controversial film Thriller – en grym film. Director Quentin Tarantino expressed his admiration for both the film and Lindberg's performance, and Madeleine later served as an inspiration for Uma Thurman's character in Tarantino's Kill Bill films. In Kill Bill he also borrowed elements from Sex & Fury. In the action-comedy spoof Sex, lögner & videovåld Lindberg made a brief cameo as Madeleine. Lindberg did not like that nude pictures were getting more and more explicit and during the filming of Gerard Damiano's Flossie (AKA Natalie--not to be confused with a 1974 film of the same name, which was directed by Mac Ahlberg and starred Marie Forså) in West Germany—she left the set and returned home to Sweden. Damiano (who also directed the infamous Deep Throat) persuaded Lindberg to leave because he knew that it was going to be a hardcore film. For several years the German producer tried to bring her back in an attempt to complete the film. According to Videooze (No. 8, 1996), about 1,000 meters of film had been shot by Damiano.
