The film follows Mr. Shi, a retired widower from Beijing. When his only daughter, Yilan, who lives in Spokane, Washington and works as a librarian, gets divorced, he decides to visit her to help her heal. However, Yilan is not interested. She tries keeping an emotional distance but when this finally fails she begins physically avoiding her father. He confronts her about an affair with a married Russian man and she, in turn, lets loose about all the gossip she'd heard as a young girl about his alleged affair with a female colleague back in China.

Henry O (simplified Chinese: 区亨利; traditional Chinese: 區亨利; pinyin: Ōu Hēnglì; born July 27, 1927) is a Chinese American actor. He is the father of Ji-li Jiang, the author of Red Scarf Girl.

Feihong Yu is a young Chinese actress, best known to Americans for her highlight role in "The Joy Luck Club" as "Ying Ying", the young mother who drowns her baby after being betrayed by her husband. She was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. The daughter of nuclear engineers, Faye was trained from age six in Chinese Classical Dance. She enrolled in the Beijing Film Academy Acting Department in 1989. While on vacation in Shanghai from the Academy she was introduced to Wayne Wang and "The Joy Luck Club" production staff, who were on a location scout. Although they had not intended to cast anyone from mainland China, they were impressed by her talent, experience, and fresh good looks and gave her the role of the most tragic character in the film. The production brought her to the U.S. for the first time, because the role, although set in China, was shot in entirely in San Francisco. After "The Joy Luck Club" Faye appeared in the Hong Kong film "Tian Di" with star Andy Lau. She returned to Beijing at the invitation of her school to become an Assistant Professor. She moved to Los Angeles in late 1994 to establish herself for work in English language Motion Pictures and Television.
Pasha D. Lychnikoff (born February 16, 1967) is a Russian television, film and theatre actor who lives and works in the United States.
Born in Moscow, where he later received formal training at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (also known as GITIS from 1934 to 1991), he moved to the United States in the early 1990s. Since his move to Los Angeles, he has appeared in many television productions and feature films. He is noted for his roles on Deadwood and The Big Bang Theory as well as in Trade. Lychnikoff has also made several stage appearances in Russia and the United States.
