Seth Warner has reached the end of his rope. Ever since his wife died two years earlier, his world has been in turmoil. He is despondent, his career has fallen apart, even his house has been destroyed. There seems to be nothing left for him to live for. Confused and angry after two years of suffering, he finally directs his wrath at God from the rooftop of his apartment building in New York City. In the midst of a wild thunderstorm he demands to know why he has been betrayed by the god he has believed in and honored his whole life. God's answer is to strike down Seth's dog in a bolt of lightning. Pushed beyond his limits, Seth decides to respond to his years of torment by breaking each of the biblical Ten Commandments.

Aidan Quinn is an Irish-American actor. He made his film debut in 1984 in Reckless. His films include Desperately Seeking Susan, The Mission, Stakeout, Benny and Joon, Legends of the Fall, Frankenstein, and Michael Collins. He played the role of Captain Thomas "Tommy" Gregson in the CBS television series Elementary (2012–2019). Quinn has received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his work in An Early Frost (1985) and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (2007).

She gained recognition for her starring role as Monica Geller on the NBC sitcom Friends, which aired from 1994 to 2004. Joanna C. Going (born 22 July 1963) is an American actress. Born in Washington, D.C., she was the oldest of six children of Lorraine M. (née Calise), a police dispatcher, and John Burke Going, a state assemblyman and lawyer. Raised in Newport, Rhode Island she graduated from Rogers High School in 1981, then attended Emerson College for two years before studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Going's childhood home in Newport was the Isaac Bell House, a 1883 McKim, Mead and White Shingle Style building on Bellevue Avenue. It is now a designated National Historic Landmark, owned by the Preservation Society of Newport County and is open as a museum.

Michael Badalucco (born December 20, 1954) is an American actor most famous for his role as lawyer Jimmy Berluti on the ABC legal drama The Practice. He won the 1999 Emmy for Best Supporting Actor for his role on the show.
Badalucco, an Italian American, was born in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York, the son of Jean, a homemaker, and Joe Badalucco, a set dresser, movie set carpenter and property person. His brother is Joseph Badalucco Jr., whose most notable role was Jimmy Altieri in the show The Sopranos.
He attended Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, graduating in 1972. He was the guest speaker at the 2005 commencement. He later attended SUNY New Paltz in New Paltz, New York.
He is married to Brenda Heyob.
