Margaret (Lena Headey) is a shy, pale, middle-class Englishwoman who is reluctantly engaged to her older, twittish neighbor Syl Monro (David Threlfall). Both bride- and groom-to-be still live with their mothers in the humdrum suburb of Croydon. However Margaret has been acting strangely ever since a vacation in Egypt, where she stayed with her mother's friend Marie-Claire (Catherine Schell). She secretly despises Syl, but does not resist when her mother Monica (Julie Walters), who has repressed the failure of her own matrimony, insists on marriage for the sake of social convention.

Jeanne Moreau (23 January 1928 – 31 July 2017) was a French actress, singer, screenwriter, and director.
She made her theatrical debut in 1947, and established herself as one of the leading actresses of the Comédie-Française. She began playing small roles in films in 1949 and eventually achieved prominence as the star of Lift to the Scaffold (UK)/Elevator to the Gallows (USA) (1958), directed by Louis Malle, and Jules et Jim (1962), directed by François Truffaut. Most prolific during the 1960s, Moreau continued to appear in films until her death in 2017, at the age of 89.
Moreau was the recipient of a César Award for Best Actress, a BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Actress and a Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Award for individual performances, and several lifetime awards.

In the latter, he is perhaps best known as the feckless Frank Gallagher in Channel 4's Shameless. In 1994 whilst working on a production of The Count of Monte Cristo at the Royal Exchange, Manchester, Threlfall met Bosnian actress Brana Bajic and the pair subsequently married a year later.

John Wood (5 July 1930 – 6 August 2011) was an English stage and screen actor known for his distinguished career in both classical and contemporary theater. He was born on July 5, 1930, in Derbyshire, England. Wood gained prominence as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he performed in numerous Shakespearean productions.

David Gant (born 1943) is a Scottish actor and model.
Formerly a banker, Gant changed careers at age 30 to study dramatic art at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland. Graduating in 1974, he has found roles in theatre, film and television.
His credits include Coriolanus at Chichester Festival Theatre, and the films Victor/Victoria (1982), The Draughtsman's Contract (1982), The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982), Gandhi (1982), Brazil (1985), Chaplin (1992), Restoration (1995), Braveheart (1995), The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999), Lagaan (2001) and Jonathan Creek: The Sinner and the Sandman (2014). He also voiced Oswald of Carim in the 2011 video game Dark Souls and Lord Aldia in the sequel, Dark Souls II, more specifically its special edition rerelease Scholar of the First Sin. Gant is an Associate and Licentiate of the London College of Music. Gant was the voice actor of Emperor Iedolas Aldercapt in Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. For the Christmas 2016 period he plays the sheriff in the Theatre Royal Norwich production of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Roger Lloyd-Pack was an English stage screen and television actor . He attended Bedales School in Hampshire and went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.
He is best known for his role as Colin "Trigger" Ball in the BBC Television sitcom "Only Fools and Horses" and later as Owen Newitt in "The Vicar of Dibley". He later gained international fame through his role as Bartemius "Barty" Crouch Sr. in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" in 2005. Lloyd-Pack died in his London home of pancreatic cancer in 2014 and is buried at Highgate Cemetery.
