Prague, 1920. Milena's father wants her to follow in his footsteps and be one of the first female doctors in Czechoslovakia, but she is determined to be a writer. She elopes to Vienna with the Jewish music critic Ernst Pollak, and starts a correspondence with Franz Kafka. She leaves Pollak and returns to Prague with her father, where she befriends and translates Kafka. As a journalist, Milena covers the 1923 Ruhr worker's strike and meets the communist architect Jaromir.

Valérie Kaprisky
Valérie Kaprisky (born August 19, 1962) is a French actress. She was born Valerie Chérès in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Hauts-de-Seine, France. Kaprisky is her mother's maiden name. She appeared in soft-core exploitation (Aphrodite), then made her American debut in the A Bout de Souffle remake Breathless (1983) frolicking with Richard Gere with whom she subsequently had a reportedly-tempestuous affair. The film was critically panned and she returned to filming in France. She also appeared in La femme publique (1984) by Andrzej Żuławski, for which she was a nominee for the 1985 César Award for Best Actress.

Gudrun Landgrebe (born 20 June 1950) is a German actress.
Landgrebe was born in Göttingen, grew up in Bochum, and attended theatre school in Cologne from 1968 until 1971. In 1971 she made her debut at Stadttheater Bielefeld. She also appeared in Heimat as the character Klärchen Sisse. Since 1981 she has frequently appeared in German movies - her first film role was in the comedy Dabbel Trabbel. In 1983 she gained international fame in the Robert van Ackerens movie Die flambierte Frau. Further movies such as Istvan Szabo's Oberst Redl (1985) and Burkhard Driest's Annas Mutter (1984) followed. In 1985 she appeared alongside Kevin McNally in The Berlin Affair.
She appeared in 1998 in the TV movie Opera Ball with Heiner Lauterbach and Franka Potente. In 1997 she was in Rossini, with Mario Adorf, Veronica Ferres, Heiner Lauterbach, Jan Josef Liefers and Götz George, directed by Helmut Dietl.
Landgrebe has been married to Dr. Ulrich von Nathusius since June 2001 and lives in Hunsrück.

Yves Jacques OC (born 10 May 1956) is a Canadian film, television and stage actor.
Jacques was born in Quebec City in 1956. He studied theatre at the Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe, and began acting on stage in both Quebec City and Montreal. He became more widely known to film and television audiences beginning in 1981 as a sketch performer in Télévision de Radio-Canada's annual Bye Bye New Year's Eve variety special, and soon began appearing more widely in film and television roles. To international audiences, he is best known as Claude, the gay academic in Denys Arcand's The Decline of the American Empire and The Barbarian Invasions. On stage, he is noted for originating the role of Lydie-Anne in the premiere of Michel Marc Bouchard's play Lilies.
He has been in several movies by French filmmaker Claude Miller, including Of Woman and Magic and Little Lili. His fame has continued to grow with films and theatrical productions in both France and Quebec. Since 2001, he has toured the world in two shows by Robert Lepage, Far Side of the Moon (La Face cachée de la lune) and Le Projet Andersen, where he played all the roles. Since 2018, he has appeared regularly in Mathieu Quesnel’s theatrical creations. More recently, he played in Aline by Valérie Lemercier, in Maria by Alec Pronovost, and in Chloé Robichaud’s Les jours heureux. In 2022, Yves Jacques played in Martin Villeneuve's The 12 Tasks of Imelda (Les 12 travaux d'Imelda), co-starring playwright Robert Lepage and actress-signer Ginette Reno.
He was named Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication de France in February 2001, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2009, for his performances in theatre, television and film, in Canada and abroad.

Philip Charles Anglim (born February 11, 1952) is an American actor. He is best known for his performance as Joseph Merrick in the stage and television versions of The Elephant Man, a role for which he received a Best Actor nomination in the 1979 Tony Awards. Other notable roles include the title role in Macbeth on Broadway and Dane O'Neill, the ill-fated love child who grew up to follow in his unknown father's footsteps on the path to the priesthood in the television mini-series The Thorn Birds. He also had a recurring guest role as the Bajoran priest Vedek Bareil on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
