Carnelle Scott is a restless Mississippi girl looking for a life change. She decides to enter a beauty pageant, which her cousin had won years before. Despite a lack of support from those close to her Carnelle remains determined. She enlists the help of a seamstress to outfit her for the competition, while rebuffing the advances of predatory men, as she aims to bring home the crown.

Holly Hunter
Holly Patricia Hunter (born March 20, 1958) is an American actress. Her accolades include an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award and two Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2008, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
For her performance as Ada McGrath in the 1993 drama film The Piano, Hunter won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She earned three additional Academy Award nominations for Broadcast News (1987), The Firm (1993) and Thirteen (2003). For her roles in the television films Roe vs. Wade (1989), and The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom (1993), she won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. Mary Nell Steenburgen (born February 8, 1953) is an American actress, comedian, singer, and songwriter. Amy Wright (born April 15, 1950) is an American actress. She has appeared in such films as The Deer Hunter, Breaking Away, The Amityville Horror, Heartland, Wise Blood, Stardust Memories, The Accidental Tourist, Hard Promises, Crossing Delancey and Miss Firecracker. Wright is married to actor Rip Torn and the couple have two daughters. Wright is a graduate of the University of Chicago Laboratory School and Beloit College. She also starred with Eric Schweig in The Scarlet Letter and Tom and Huck (both made in 1995). She starred in the original production of Breakfast with Les and Bess as Shelby. Lahti made her Broadway debut in 1980 as a replacement in Loose Ends, and went on to star in the Broadway productions of Present Laughter (1982) and The Heidi Chronicles (1989). An eight-time Golden Globe nominee and six-time Emmy Award nominee, she won a Golden Globe for the 1989 TV movie No Place Like Home, and won a Golden Globe and an Emmy in 1998 for her role as Kate Austin in the CBS series Chicago Hope (1995–99). Bert Remsen (February 25, 1925 – April 22, 1999) was an American actor.
Remsen was born in Glen Cove, New York, on Long Island. He played character roles in numerous films directed by Robert Altman, including: Brewster McCloud (1970), McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), Thieves Like Us (1974), California Split (1974), Nashville (1975), Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson (1976), A Wedding (1978), "Dallas" as Harrison 'Dandy' Dandridge (1987) and Daddy's Dyin'...Who's Got the Will? (1990).
After suffering an injury on the set of a television show, Remsen had moved away from acting. He was hired as the casting director on Brewster McCloud when Altman talked him into taking a role in the film.
He was briefly married to Little House on the Prairie actress Katherine MacGregor.

Brent Jay Spiner (/ˈspaɪnər/, born February 2, 1949, height 5' 10" (1,78 m)) is an American actor, best known for his portrayal of the android Lieutenant Commander Data in the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation and four subsequent films. His portrayal of Data in Star Trek: First Contact and of Dr. Brackish Okun in Independence Day, both in 1996, earned him a Saturn Award and Saturn Award nomination respectively.
He has also enjoyed a career in the theatre and as a musician.
Brent Jay Spiner was born February 2, 1949 in Houston, Texas to Sylvia and Jack Spiner, who owned a furniture store. After his father's death, Spiner was adopted by Sylvia's second husband, Sol Mintz, whose surname he used between 1955 and 1975. Spiner was raised Jewish. He attended Bellaire High School, Bellaire, Texas. Spiner became active on the Bellaire Speech team, winning the national championship in dramatic interpretation. He attended the University of Houston where he performed in local theatre.
